Interior design at J. Peterson Design covers the planning and documentation for your home's interior spaces. We create the drawings and specifications for your contractor to build, and we select the materials and furnishings for a complete home.

What we do

Our Discovery phase defines your project goals. In Design, we develop the overall concept for your home. Documentation produces detailed drawings and specifications for your contractor. Material procurement involves selecting and ordering all finishes and fixtures. During Construction, we visit the site to ensure the design is executed as planned. Furniture procurement & installation completes your home with selected furnishings.

What is included in your Interior Design service?

Our Interior Design service includes all six phases of our process: Discovery, Design, Documentation, Material procurement, Construction site visits, and Furniture procurement & installation. We provide detailed drawings, specifications, and selections for your home.

How does this service differ from your Full-Home Design service?

This Interior Design service is comprehensive, covering all aspects of your home's interior from concept to installation. Full-Home Design is a broader term that also encompasses the entire home, but this page specifically details the interior design process and deliverables.

What do I receive at the end of the Documentation phase?

After Documentation, you receive a complete set of detailed drawings and written specifications. These documents allow your contractor to accurately bid and build the design for your home.

How does J. Peterson Design work with my contractor?

We provide your contractor with the detailed drawings and specifications from our Documentation phase. During Construction, Jennifer Peterson in Chicago and Southwest Michigan, or Jill Kearns in Atlanta, will conduct site visits to review the progress and address any design-related questions.

Is this service for single rooms or entire homes?

This Interior Design service is for entire homes, providing a cohesive design across all interior spaces. For single rooms like kitchens, bathrooms, or living spaces, we offer specific Kitchen Design, Bathroom Design, or Living Space services.

About the studio

Two sisters, one studio

Jennifer Peterson founded J. Peterson Design in 2008 and leads our work in Chicago and Southwest Michigan. Her sister, Jill Kearns, leads the Atlanta studio. Together, we design homes that feel considered and beautiful, but also comfortable, functional, and personal to the people who live in them.

Although we work in different cities, we operate as one studio. We talk through plans, share ideas, question each other, and bring another experienced set of eyes to the decisions that matter. Being sisters makes that collaboration especially natural — there is a shorthand, an honesty, and a shared standard that has been there long before the studio.
