This South Haven, Michigan home, completed in December 2022, features an open-plan kitchen and living area designed for family gatherings. The kitchen showcases white cabinetry, light countertops, and a distinctive teal-green scalloped tile backsplash. A large island with a light blue base and a light-colored countertop provides seating and additional counter space. The adjacent living area offers views of the outdoors, with a light blue sofa and a stone fireplace contributing to a relaxed atmosphere.

The project also includes a bathroom with blue patterned wallpaper, a white vanity with a light countertop, and a tall cabinet featuring woven cane panels. Another kitchen space is presented with white cabinetry, dark countertops, and a shiplap backsplash, centered around a wooden table with benches. Jennifer Peterson of J. Peterson Design led this project.

About the studio

Two sisters, one studio

Jennifer Peterson founded J. Peterson Design in 2008 and leads our work in Chicago and Southwest Michigan. Her sister, Jill Kearns, leads the Atlanta studio. Together, we design homes that feel considered and beautiful, but also comfortable, functional, and personal to the people who live in them.

Although we work in different cities, we operate as one studio. We talk through plans, share ideas, question each other, and bring another experienced set of eyes to the decisions that matter. Being sisters makes that collaboration especially natural — there is a shorthand, an honesty, and a shared standard that has been there long before the studio.
