A basement kitchen and bar area with dark blue cabinets, a large white island with seating, stainless steel appliances, and a white tiled backsplash with open shelving for bottles. A basement bar features blue shaker cabinets, a large island with four bar stools, stainless steel appliances, and a window. A basement living area with a dark blue kitchen island, light wood floors, and a view into a media room. A basement bar with white subway tile, a gold faucet, a white sink, and dark wood shelves holding liquor bottles. A room with light wood floors features a dark blue accent wall, a large window, a fireplace, and a wooden swing, with an outdoor patio visible through glass doors. A screened-in porch with a brick accent wall, outdoor seating, a table, and large windows overlooking a grassy yard. A custom wooden Hindu prayer altar is built into a wall, featuring a large Ganesha statue, various deities, and religious symbols. A wide-angle view of a finished basement featuring a dark blue bar with a white countertop and four bar stools, light wood flooring, and a lounge area with a hanging swing.

This Alpharetta, GA basement remodel, completed in January 2025, features a large open-plan space with a full bar and an adjacent sitting area. The bar area showcases dark blue cabinetry, a white quartz waterfall edge countertop, and a white stone subway tile backsplash. Gold accents are present in the hardware, lighting fixtures, and bar faucet, complementing the warm tones of the light wood flooring. A large kitchen island with seating for four serves as a central gathering point.

The space flows into a relaxed sitting area with a large window overlooking a wooded outdoor area. This room also features a unique hanging swing and leads to an enclosed porch with brick and wood paneling, furnished with outdoor seating. The overall design creates a cohesive and inviting environment for entertaining and relaxation. The project was completed in collaboration with Victoria Renovations, General Contractor.

About the studio

Two sisters, one studio

Jennifer Peterson founded J. Peterson Design in 2008 and leads our work in Chicago and Southwest Michigan. Her sister, Jill Kearns, leads the Atlanta studio. Together, we design homes that feel considered and beautiful, but also comfortable, functional, and personal to the people who live in them.

Although we work in different cities, we operate as one studio. We talk through plans, share ideas, question each other, and bring another experienced set of eyes to the decisions that matter. Being sisters makes that collaboration especially natural — there is a shorthand, an honesty, and a shared standard that has been there long before the studio.
