This kitchen in Inverness, IL, completed in May 2021, features a bright and open design. White cabinetry and light countertops create a fresh palette, complemented by a distinctive patterned backsplash. A large blue island with seating anchors the space, providing both a focal point and additional functionality. Stainless steel appliances, including a range with a matching hood and a refrigerator, are integrated into the design.

The kitchen is arranged with a central island and perimeter cabinetry, offering ample storage and workspace. A window above the sink provides a view to the outdoors, while decorative lighting fixtures illuminate the island. Mirrored cabinet doors flank the refrigerator, adding a reflective element to the design. This space is designed for both cooking and gathering.

About the studio

Two sisters, one studio

Jennifer Peterson founded J. Peterson Design in 2008 and leads our work in Chicago and Southwest Michigan. Her sister, Jill Kearns, leads the Atlanta studio. Together, we design homes that feel considered and beautiful, but also comfortable, functional, and personal to the people who live in them.

Although we work in different cities, we operate as one studio. We talk through plans, share ideas, question each other, and bring another experienced set of eyes to the decisions that matter. Being sisters makes that collaboration especially natural — there is a shorthand, an honesty, and a shared standard that has been there long before the studio.
