This Arlington Heights, IL kitchen, completed in January 2021 by Jennifer Peterson, features a central island with a farmhouse sink and seating, anchoring the open layout. The island's dark wood cabinetry contrasts with the white upper cabinets and stainless steel appliances, including a refrigerator and a range. A light-colored, veined countertop extends across the island and perimeter, complemented by a scalloped tile backsplash in muted green tones. Natural light fills the space through multiple windows, and two brass and white pendant lights illuminate the island.
The design incorporates a dedicated pantry area with open shelving and closed storage, painted in a coordinating gray. This section provides space for a mixer, cookbooks, and various kitchen items. The consistent light wood flooring unifies the kitchen with an adjacent dining area, visible through an open doorway, creating a cohesive and functional living space.

About the studio
Two sisters, one studio
Jennifer Peterson founded J. Peterson Design in 2008 and leads our work in Chicago and Southwest Michigan. Her sister, Jill Kearns, leads the Atlanta studio. Together, we design homes that feel considered and beautiful, but also comfortable, functional, and personal to the people who live in them.
Although we work in different cities, we operate as one studio. We talk through plans, share ideas, question each other, and bring another experienced set of eyes to the decisions that matter. Being sisters makes that collaboration especially natural — there is a shorthand, an honesty, and a shared standard that has been there long before the studio.
