This Palatine, IL project, completed in July 2023, features a bright and spacious kitchen that opens onto a dining area. White cabinetry and light-colored countertops create a clean aesthetic, complemented by a hexagonal mosaic tile backsplash. Stainless steel appliances and dark hardware provide contrast. A central island with a dark base offers additional counter space, while a built-in banquette with a round table creates a cozy breakfast nook.

The adjoining bathroom features a vanity with dark wood cabinetry and a light countertop, along with a large mirror framed in a light wood tone. French doors with mirrored panels lead to another area of the bathroom, which includes open shelving. This renovation by Jennifer Peterson of J. Peterson Design emphasizes a cohesive and elegant design throughout.

About the studio

Two sisters, one studio

Jennifer Peterson founded J. Peterson Design in 2008 and leads our work in Chicago and Southwest Michigan. Her sister, Jill Kearns, leads the Atlanta studio. Together, we design homes that feel considered and beautiful, but also comfortable, functional, and personal to the people who live in them.

Although we work in different cities, we operate as one studio. We talk through plans, share ideas, question each other, and bring another experienced set of eyes to the decisions that matter. Being sisters makes that collaboration especially natural — there is a shorthand, an honesty, and a shared standard that has been there long before the studio.
