This Streamwood, IL kitchen, completed in September 2022, features a bright and inviting design. The space centers around a large island with a light-colored marble countertop and a dark gray base, providing both seating and additional storage, including a built-in wine rack and microwave nook. Two large, dark-framed pendant lights illuminate the island, complementing the recessed lighting throughout the room. The kitchen walls are lined with white cabinetry and light-toned, patterned tile backsplash.

Stainless steel appliances, including a refrigerator and oven, are integrated into the cabinetry. A large window above the sink offers views of the outdoors, while smaller windows above the upper cabinets allow for additional natural light. The flooring throughout is a warm-toned hardwood, adding to the kitchen's overall welcoming atmosphere. This project was led by Jennifer Peterson.

About the studio

Two sisters, one studio

Jennifer Peterson founded J. Peterson Design in 2008 and leads our work in Chicago and Southwest Michigan. Her sister, Jill Kearns, leads the Atlanta studio. Together, we design homes that feel considered and beautiful, but also comfortable, functional, and personal to the people who live in them.

Although we work in different cities, we operate as one studio. We talk through plans, share ideas, question each other, and bring another experienced set of eyes to the decisions that matter. Being sisters makes that collaboration especially natural — there is a shorthand, an honesty, and a shared standard that has been there long before the studio.
