This Inverness, IL project, completed in August 2024, features a spacious kitchen with a large central island. The kitchen includes white cabinetry, dark wood flooring, and a light-colored countertop. A subway tile backsplash in a muted green-gray hue adds a subtle pop of color behind the range and sink areas. Stainless steel appliances, including a refrigerator, oven, and dishwasher, are integrated into the design, complemented by black hardware on the cabinetry.

The kitchen is open to a dedicated bar area with white cabinetry, a light countertop, and a dark green subway tile backsplash. This area features glass-front upper cabinets for displaying glassware, under-cabinet lighting, and a beverage refrigerator. The overall design creates a cohesive and functional space for cooking, dining, and entertaining.

About the studio

Two sisters, one studio

Jennifer Peterson founded J. Peterson Design in 2008 and leads our work in Chicago and Southwest Michigan. Her sister, Jill Kearns, leads the Atlanta studio. Together, we design homes that feel considered and beautiful, but also comfortable, functional, and personal to the people who live in them.

Although we work in different cities, we operate as one studio. We talk through plans, share ideas, question each other, and bring another experienced set of eyes to the decisions that matter. Being sisters makes that collaboration especially natural — there is a shorthand, an honesty, and a shared standard that has been there long before the studio.
