This project in Inverness, IL, completed in May 2021, features a thoughtfully designed powder room and an adjacent mudroom. The powder room has a vanity with a gray-painted cabinet, a white countertop, and a classic oval mirror. The walls are adorned with a light-toned wallpaper featuring a subtle branching pattern, complemented by a warm-toned light fixture. Gold-toned fixtures and a white ceramic sink complete the space.

The mudroom offers practical storage solutions with open cubbies and hooks, along with woven baskets in overhead shelves. A built-in bench provides seating, and a utility sink is integrated into a white cabinet with a light-colored countertop. The floor features a patterned tile, and a window with dark wood trim brings natural light into the room. Jennifer Peterson led this project.

About the studio

Two sisters, one studio

Jennifer Peterson founded J. Peterson Design in 2008 and leads our work in Chicago and Southwest Michigan. Her sister, Jill Kearns, leads the Atlanta studio. Together, we design homes that feel considered and beautiful, but also comfortable, functional, and personal to the people who live in them.

Although we work in different cities, we operate as one studio. We talk through plans, share ideas, question each other, and bring another experienced set of eyes to the decisions that matter. Being sisters makes that collaboration especially natural — there is a shorthand, an honesty, and a shared standard that has been there long before the studio.
