Mudroom in Decatur
We design mudrooms for homes in Chicago, Southwest Michigan, and Atlanta. This service focuses on creating a dedicated, organized entry space for daily living. We plan the layout and select all materials for your mudroom.
What we do
Our process begins with a Design consultation to understand your home and how you use your entry space. We then present your design, including initial layouts and material concepts. Construction documents follow, providing detailed drawings for your contractor. Material selections cover all finishes, fixtures, and built-ins. We conduct Jobsite inspections to ensure the design is executed as planned, and we guide you through the Finishing touches.
Who it suits
This service is for homes in Chicago, Southwest Michigan, and Atlanta that need a dedicated entry and storage area. It suits older bungalows, new construction, and homes where an existing space can be reconfigured. We design mudrooms for families and individuals who need a highly organized entry.

In Decatur
Homes in Decatur
Decatur homeowners often live in 1920s and 1930s bungalows in neighborhoods like Oakhurst and Winnona Park, where small, enclosed kitchens frequently prompt Kitchen Design projects to open up the space. Many homes in Clairemont and Great Lakes Estates, built in the 1950s and 1960s, feature primary bathrooms with outdated layouts that benefit from Bathroom Design and space planning. Later homes in Medlock Park, from the 1970s and 1980s, often have basements with low ceilings, making Basement Remodel projects common to improve functionality. We also assist with Furnishing & Styling for homes across these eras, ensuring new pieces complement existing architecture.
What homeowners in Decatur ask for
Homeowners in Decatur frequently engage us for Kitchen Design to modernize 1920s and 1930s bungalow kitchens, often involving removing walls to create more open living spaces. Bathroom Design projects are also common in 1950s and 1960s homes, where we reconfigure layouts to maximize space and update fixtures. Many requests involve Full-Home Design for older residences that require comprehensive updates to multiple living spaces and bedrooms. We also provide Furnishing & Styling for homes built in the 1970s and 1980s, updating interiors to reflect contemporary tastes.

About the studio
Two sisters, one studio
Jennifer Peterson founded J. Peterson Design in 2008 and leads our work in Chicago and Southwest Michigan. Her sister, Jill Kearns, leads the Atlanta studio. Together, we design homes that feel considered and beautiful, but also comfortable, functional, and personal to the people who live in them.
Although we work in different cities, we operate as one studio. We talk through plans, share ideas, question each other, and bring another experienced set of eyes to the decisions that matter. Being sisters makes that collaboration especially natural — there is a shorthand, an honesty, and a shared standard that has been there long before the studio.
